The prophet Zachariah was a prophet who preached during the reconstruction of the second temple of Jerusalem, during the Persian domination in the Middle East; this was an era of peace where the Achaemenid dynasty tolerated all religions and practiced justice with the subject nations, however, these were not times without dangers.
The book of Zechariah tells us that a delegation went to consult the prophet about a matter concerning fasting, and as a prophet, Zechariah responded with an oracle. The Lord was not displeased, but for God formalisms are worthless if they are not accompanied by the fear of God (constancy, firmness, devotion, and equanimity), that was the prophet's response.
The prophet reminded them with his oracle that the children of Israel must live as brothers and that the evil that is done to the neighbor returns to oneself.
Thus begins the oracle of Zacariah, recalling the importance of the gifts of fear and mercy (compassion, kindness, gentleness) to make the law of Moses fruitful:
"This is what the LORD Almighty said: ´Administer true justice; show mercy and compassion to one another. Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless, the foreigner or the poor. Do not plot evil against each other´" Zechariah 7:8-10.
But the oracle continued and explained why the kingdoms of Israel and Judah were destroyed by the invasions:
"But they refused to pay attention; stubbornly they turned their backs and covered their ears. They made their hearts as hard as flint and would not listen to the law or to the words that the LORD Almighty had sent by his Spirit through the earlier prophets. So the LORD Almighty was very angry" Zechariah 7:11-12.
Zacariah with this left a clear message, goodness and the wisdom of God help everyone, but sin only leaves death and suffering, but it is up to men to choose as wise or foolish.
