Justified by God: His desires are not upright—but the righteous person will live by his faithfulness

Habakkuk is a minor prophet who wrote his book at a time when the Babylonian empire destroyed Jerusalem, probably between 587 and 600 BC. This prophet in his book deals with the problem of evil and wonders why the pagan empires, such as Assyria and Babylon, that they were not exactly examples of devotion and righteousness towards the lord, triumphed over Israel. From this point of view, the book of Habakkuk has similarities with the book of Job.
It is then that the prophet Habakkuk receives the answer of the Lord in an oracle, in due time all sinners and their temporal empires, will receive their retribution, but the complete man must persevere because he will live by his fidelity. This oracle of Habakkuk is of great importance because it will be the basis for the doctrine of justification by faith, developed by the apostle Paul in the epistles to the Romans, the Galatians, and the Ephesians. To be justified means to be absolved from sins and be declared righteous in front of God.
The oracle begins by explaining to us that the prophet is a sentinel for the people of Israel, the word of God comes at the least expected moment, and the prophet must give notice:
"I will stand at my watch
and station myself on the ramparts;
I will look to see what he will say to me,
and what answer I am to give to this complaint." Habakkuk 2:1.
The Lord orders Habakkuk to write the vision, it will take time but in due time it will be fulfilled, as in Psalm 1, the psalm of the two paths, the just and the sinner will have due retribution for their works, whoever fears the Lord will be justified and blessed, but the sinner will go to his ruin:
"Then the LORD replied:
´Write down the revelation
and make it plain on tablets
so that a herald may run with it.
For the revelation awaits an appointed time;
it speaks of the end
and will not prove false.
Though it linger, wait for it;
it will certainly come
and will not delay.
See, the enemy is puffed up;
his desires are not upright—
but the righteous person will live by his faithfulness—´" Habakkuk 2:2-4.
