The Esala Perahera in Kandy is one of the oldest and grandest of all Buddhist festivals in Sri Lanka, featuring dancers, jugglers, musicians, fire-breathers, and lavishly decorated elephants. This is held in Esala (July or August) which is the month that is believed to commemorate the first teaching given by the Buddha after he attained enlightenment. The Kandy Esala Perahera lasts for ten days while various festivities can be witnessed right throughout.
My personal Experience :
parade was beautiful! The people showed off their incredible skills. There was lots of fire, singing and dancing. It really felt magical. there are lots of elephants joining the parade. also you can see sri lanka real traditional things here . My advice if you really want to see the parade: don’t buy tickets but wait for a few hours between the locals before the parade begins. It was lots of fun and you really celebrate Perahera between the locals.
Great photos. I caught some of it on rupavahini. Would love to make it out there one day.
Thanks for the tip about tickets. Do you usually get a pretty good spot?
I've got some photos from kataragama perahera I should throw up here
