Here in Pampanga we also have our own version of the manananggal. We call it the Magkukutud. Kutod roughly translates "to cut" like how you would cut a dried branch of a tree. I am still trying to see the significance why they used this term to refer to some Kapampangan folkloric creature that self-segments.
When I was young I keep hearing about this creature but I could not get a clear picture in my head about its looks and or habits. I asked around and the older folks in the barangay said it is indeed similar to a manananggal but the magkukutud lays eggs. Yes, that is the fun part of the story. A self segmenter will lay eggs. The older folks say if you open these eggs you will find human body parts. Maybe the magkukutud has the means to sack them together and lay them on a secluded area for no apparent reason.
This drawing is the artist's idea of how a magkukutud looks like. I must say it is quite modern and makes sense. The lower part of the body is narrowed I am guessing maybe the artist thinks it would be practical that there should be some means to tighten that open gut to avoid blood from dripping. I think I would agree to that idea.
I hope you learn a bit about our Kapampangan folklore.
