Fuligo septica
The yellow slime mold, or dog-vomit mold.
Yellow slime has been on planet for millions of years, surviving on bacteria, decaying leaves and logs. Its favourite food which it actively hunts, is the white fungus. It is actually an animal! A protist. A member of the amoeba family, with over 700 members. It has self assembly, alturism, problem solving ability, communication, logic and, yes, even a form of memory! Its ability to navigate a maze without a brain suggests a transport network design that scientists can learn much from. Its non photosynthetic, as an animal, so comes in almost every colour but green. :)
I captured this video at work in our new garden beds shortly after the spring rains.
Isnt life just trippy!
I am simply captivated by this creature.
Enjoy.
