A sad fall for a great actor. I was a big fan of his work in "The Usual Suspects" and elsewhere. But if the charges are true, he's also a horrible sexual predator. Professional greatness isn't mutually exclusive with evil. We shouldn't fall prey to the temptation of assuming that our favorite Hollywood celebrities (to say nothing of our preferred politicians - who are a much worse class of people, on average) are free of moral failings, or even free of criminality.
I didn't closely follow the Depp v. Heard trial, and don't know who was telling the truth. But I suspect one key reason why so many stuck by Depp is that he's a famous actor with millions of adoring fans. Many of the latter wouldn't want to accept that their idol was guilty of domestic violence, even if the evidence indicates he was. Heard, of course, has her own fans. But not nearly as many.
