Keziah Daum, a high school graduate from Salt Lake City, the United States, never expected that her wearing a traditional Chinese dress to her prom would provoke such controversy.
The 18-year-old, who picked her Chinese-style dress in a wish to "be more unique and bold" at the highly anticipated rite of passage, came under fire in late April after photos of her posing with her friends at prom wearing a red cheongsam went viral on Twitter. "I wouldn’t wear traditional Korean, Japanese or any other traditional dress and I’m Asian. I wouldn’t wear traditional Irish or Swedish or Greek dress either. There’s a lot of history behind these clothes," the Twitter user noted, spurring an onslaught of similar criticism over her "cultural appropriation."
Daum responded that she meant no offense to Chinese culture by simply wearing Chinese traditional dress. The Twitter backlash, however, has also prompted a wave of support for the teenager, with some netizens appreciating her choice of cultural fashion while others were expressing concerns over the brutal online attacks on the 18-year-old.
