Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Khamenei, said on Thursday that those who desecrate the Koran, Islam's holy book, should receive "the harshest punishment" and that Sweden was "poised for war against the Islamic world" by supporting such individuals.
Sweden authorized a rally in front of the Iraqi embassy in Stockholm. Those involved in the rally had indicated their intention to burn the Koran and the Iraqi flag. These moves were met with protests in Iran and Iraq, and demonstrators in Iraq set fire to the Swedish embassy in Baghdad on August 20.
At a rally in Stockholm, participants kicked a Koran, but did not burn it, and the rally ended after about an hour.
Swedish authorities have condemned these acts but have stated that they cannot be prevented under the principle of free speech.
According to Iranian state media, Ayatollah Khamenei demanded that Sweden hand over those responsible. He later posted on Twitter, "They have instilled feelings of hatred and hostility in all Muslim countries and many of their governments."
The Swedish government has so far been unavailable for comment.
