Kick-Ass is about to Kick Ass Again

News and promo images have been floating around the internet these past few months about Mark Millar returning to his Kick-Ass property, because creators of profitable series who purport that they’ll actually end them is one steaming pile of BS and the one thing you can rely on in the comics industry. But, going back to Millar and his (not really) realistic superhero franchise Kick-Ass, we are going to get more comics from this corner of his fictional universe in the coming year. Now, I may think that Millar just wants to shake me down for my nerd coins, but I have to say I’m pretty much looking forward to see where they’ll be taking the property next.

To be exact, there are two series coming up under the Kick-Ass franchise. First, there’s the reboot to the titular property, which will feature a black female character donning the green and yellow jumpsuit. Then, there’s another series featuring everyone’s favorite miniscule serial killer, Hit-Girl. Although I must inform you that we can’t exactly call Mindy McReady “miniscule” anymore, since Millar has confirmed that the series will be set years after the events of Kick-Ass 3, which means Hit-Girl will be either in her late teens or early 20s this time around. Either way, we all know Millar will be swimming in a pool of nerd bucks once both these series are released.
Let’s start with the new Kick-Ass comic coming out. It’s going to be, of course, written by Millar himself and illustrated by the property’s co-creator, John Romita, Jr. Now, this one’s going to be set a decade after Dave, the original character to wear the green and yellows, quit his superhero gig. Hence, we’re getting a new character underneath the mask named Patience Lee. As we’d expect from the series, this’ll be a limited run, which will almost be assuredly divided into volumes.

What’s more interesting, personally, is the new Hit-Girl comic coming out almost around the same time as the new volume of Kick-Ass. This’ll be in the same period, so like I said, Mindy’s going to be older. However, what piques my curiosity the most is that, first, it’s going to be an ongoing title, which means it’ll just keep going well after the sun burns out and we all die a frozen death. Secondly, this will be the first (or second, if I’m not mistaken) time that Millar will be allowing other writers and artists to do these characters.
So, what does this move by Millarworld tell us? Simple, really: there’s a chance we’re going to get a Kick-Ass movie reboot, which may perhaps star this new character. Or, maybe we’re even finally getting a Hit-Girl film spinoff. After all, Mark Millar doesn’t really work on comics anymore; he now only makes properties that could be launched into a TV series or movie. Regardless, I would very much prefer a solo Hit-Girl outing on the big screen as long as Chloe Grace Moretz returns for the role.
