Raising Belizean Children

I had a lot of reasons for wanting to move here. It's worth saying again that, if you're considering moving abroad or traveling full time, make sure you're going toward something, rather than running away from something.

I moved toward this.

One of the things drawing me to Belize is the life of children here. Every day kids walk to and from school, even in Belize city. And they do it twice because they go home for lunch. The big ones watch out for the little ones.

They wander free outside after school and on off days. If another adult sees a child being mean or crazy in a way that actually requires intervention, they say something. Speaking of which, almost nothing requires intervention.

This did not require intervention. All the same, glad I didn't see it until I saw the picture.

My mother in law is visiting. She was with the kids at the dock on the river, and some neighbor kids were over there. As the 2 year old climbed the tree, rather skillfully, the mil was both terrified and awed. To be fair, the girl is a haus. Kids climb and run and fall and play in the river. They get hurt, and they heal. They are outside all the time.

No one is suing anyone because their kid fell out of a tree at someone's house or accidentally got a fishing hook in the hand. No one is worried about somebody stealing their kids because it just almost never happens.

Kids are free. And they play a lot and wildly. Yet they're also almost all very sweet. It melts my heart almost every time we go to the playground. Most kids are so kind and helpful with my children. They're also very comfortable and friendly with adults. It's so wonderful.

Belize is like a radical free range child experiment. My kids getting a Belizean childhood is one of my great joys and one of my favorite reasons to live here.

Hi mama!

Talking about your kids really reminds me about my childhood. We didn't have playgrounds covered in foam and the slides were metal. I feel like now in the US, kids are essentially not allowed to be themselves. This I feel harms how they learn and their behavior in later stages of life.

It's just really good to see children safe and actually playing :D

Love,
shello

Risk taking is so critical. I try to back off as much as I can and teach them to pay attention to their bodies and intuition. Sometimes they overestimate their abilities, but usually not. The loss of the merry go round from the playground was super sad for me. You just never see them anymore, and it was my favorite thing.

I have never seen a merry-go-round in a park before! I miss swings the most :'c Having your children understand their bodies early on is important. A scratch or two now beat the worse things that could happen later!

Really?! Maybe they call them something else in Hawaii? Not like an amusement park merry go round. It's a thing you stand on and spin around really fast. I love, love swings.

LMAO I know what they look like, we went from super old to real new skool, so we skipped when those got implemented. I think we would actually injure each other pretty bad if we had gotten them xD

Swings are all bust here.... I would love for Hawaii's parks to get a makeover, but that will probably not be for a while!

That really is funny that I was so aghast there. It's a bummer you missed those. We got hurt regularly, but they were worth it. That's awful your swings are busted. Aren't there a lot of people there with silly money? You'd think someone would do something about bruk up parks. That's sad.

I've fallen off the metal jungle gym enough times x3 I would imagine them being a new level of fun for us. There a thing about that though, the people with the money here, either don't live here or are constructing more condos. It's getting crazy in Honolulu tbh. On the plus side, Hawaii might become the first state to pass universal income.... hmmm...

Universal income is gonna make such a big difference. I just can't understand people having money and not doing any good with it.

Can I be a kid again? In Belize? I never got to climb trees, really climb, when I was little. Now I'm 59.

It's never too late. I climb trees all the time here!

Thanks. I wish I could hop on a plane. I know a visit would be therapeutic.

It's a magical place.
