The Bible teaches the true spiritual meaning of prophecies. In the sacred scriptures the prophecy has always been in a sense an expression of the eternal providence of God, and in this lies the true power of prophecy; because there is a teaching of wisdom that should never be forgotten by the sensible men: "We may make our plans, but God has the last word" Proverb 16:1.
And the First Book of Kings tells a very interesting story about how prophecy prevails even over the most powerful men; and this story is the account of how the prophet Ahijah prophesied to Jeroboam, an official in Solomon's court, that he would become King of ten of the tribes of Israel, and would cause a division with the tribe of Judah that would remain for the descendants of David.
The Lord, the Bible says, was upset because Solomon, to please his foreign wives, worshiped Ashtoreth and Molech; and so God decided to take away part of the Kingdom of Israel to the descendants of Solomon.
With these words, the prophet Ahijah addressed Jeroboam: "See, I am going to tear the kingdom out of Solomon's hand and tive you ten tribes. But for the sake of my servant David and the city of Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, he will have one tribe" 1 Kings 11:31-32.
The Bible relates that Solomon was informed of Ahijah's prophecy and tried to kill Jeroboam, but with this fact, the only thing Solomon achieved was that the prophecy became stronger, Jeroboam escaped from the hands of Solomon and waited for his time to be fulfilled: "Solomon tried to kill Jeroboam, but Jeroboam fled to Egypt, to Shishak the king, and stayed there until Solomon's death" 1 Kings 11:40.
In resume what this story teaches is that when a prophecy is true, everything that is done against it only reinforces it, because the prophecy is an expression of God's plan.
