When I made my Gnome I finished the project by making the hat. I described the process here and here. Now in order to make Gnoodles the Gnome I started with the hat and to continue the body in one piece, ie without sewing any seams, I next needed to pick up stitches on the fold of the hat brim.

Below is just one of the tutorials that I’ve found that made this seemingly hard step very fast :

The author has a number of the tutorials explaining the same process depending on the gnome that's being knitted.

I used a fine crochet hook to pick up the stitches with some contrast colour pink which is again DK (double knitting) because I didn't have any thinner yarn handy.

I then started the body section and after a couple of rows I met my first real obstacle. I had to increase using both M1R (make one stitch to the right) and M1L (make one stitch to the left). I was confused and had to unravel a couple of times because whatever I did looked the same to me. I then remembered the tutorials and went back to look for a suitable one. Starting and stopping knitting to watch possible You Tube tutorials is not very good but I wanted to clarify between the two abbreviations.

M1L is explained below :

I’ll be perfectly honest, it still looks a bit similar to me, but I’ll follow the tutorials. Here’s the other one for M1R :

That’s precisely what I’m still trying to grapple with. It’s not a race against time and it's basically a detail. I want to 'follow' the instructions so that every technique I learn I’ll be able to apply in future projects.
