This year I offered my pupils to make something for them before they leave school. They could choose an accessoire like a hat or a headband.
One of the girls wanted me to make the Team America 2018 Hat, a free pattern on ravelry.
And here the adventure begins.
I didn't bother to make the maths with the measurements in the pattern, didn't bother with the gauge, but started working right away. Very clever!
Working on the hat was a lot of fun. I really enjoy colourwork. When I realized that this hat was much too large for anyone I know, the hat was almost finished.
I had put at least 12 hours of work into it.
That was the moment when I took out my calculator. For the gauge I had an almost finished hat. It turned out that I had 36 stitches too many.
So I unraveled the hat and eventually made the maths.
If you do colourwork, you will know that the patterns need a certain number of stitches. For the hat there were several sections, which needed a multiple of 2,4,6,8,9 or 18.
I settled for 108 stitches. So I only had to change the sections with a multiple of eight.
When I had finished the brim, I took the work to school with me to have my pupil try it on. I had become very cautious. But it was fine. The size was ok.
After that I worked on the hat almost without breaks. And here is the finished object:

I've done the same thing! Started happily knitting away before realizing my gauge was wrong! Turned out lovely! I'll bet your student is very happy. Thanks for sharing.
