Basic Seamanship - Knot Making

in knots •  7 years ago

Hello Friends!

For today I would like to show a few knots that we use either daily or for special works on board .

A knot is a method of fastening or securing a material such as rope by tying or interweaving .

It is one of the basic things in seamanship and in the same time it is one of the most important things, because a strong knot can make the difference between life and death.

To me knot making is not only important but fun as well because my great-grandfather was a skilled fisherman with over 85 years on the sea .
Before I went to sea as a sailor I had already learned some knots from my great-grandfather .

But let us see some basic nautical knots that we need to know :

Note: Here you can see in a strange yellow color a pear shaped knot named monkey's fist. That knot is used as a weight at the end of a heaving line that is used to tie ropes and send them to shore were mooring men will tie them to the bollards on the pier.

Knots can be used as a decoration they can be even art.
From a simple knot:

to more fun knots like the Overhand Knot:

Twist the string or rope into circles , I made 3 circles.

Then put the other end into the circles you made and throw and pull the rope.

The exact way is to throw the rope in the air by holding and pulling the end that you just inserted in the 3 circles you made. If you don't throw them and just pull, you will have this:

If you done the correct way you will have this result:

The more circles you make the more knots it will be.
