The secret of Gnosis: Where there are no eyes, there is no light, and where there is no knowledge, there is no wisdom. Ben Sira 3:25

Many passages of the Bible cannot be interpreted rationally but must be interpreted in the light of grace, and this occurs especially in the sapiential texts, that is, in those writings that gradually reveal that wisdom which is, as Jesus taught, a hidden treasure, and a pearl of great price, like the Book of Proverbs, Wisdom, Ecclesiastes, and Ben Sira.
And the master of wisdom Ben Sira left in his book a teaching that reveals the path to the most important spiritual phenomenon, the gnosis, which is the gateway to the contemplative life, the meditation focused in the divine attributes of God, and the illuminating wisdom of the human mind. And so with these words, the master of wisdom gave his spiritual teaching: "Where there are no eyes, there is no light, and where there is no knowledge, there is no wisdom" Ben Sira 3:25.
The beginning of all that is blessed is the acquisition of spiritual knowledge, taught the master of wisdom Ben Sira in his book. Wisdom, which is the very essence of God, tests men and does not bestow her blessings until men prove themselves worthy of her, this is why men must approach her through the gradual acquisition of knowledge. The path of truth is the path to that illuminating wisdom that makes men fully similar to God, and just as eyes are needed to perceive light and so comprehend the physical world, so knowledge is needed to receive the secret of Gnosis and the gift of wisdom and so comprehend the spiritual realities, this is what Ben Sira wanted to teach with his phrase.
The philosopher Plato even talked about this spiritual fact in his allegory of the cave in his book The Republic, in his story Plato described how a man chained deep in a cave, which symbolizes ignorance, frees himself from his prison and gradually ascends to the surface where he manages to see the light of the sun and see the world as it is; in essence this is a story of how through the ascesis of knowledge man reaches that true spiritual reality which is the wisdom of God. The Book of Ben Sira invites men to seek knowledge, the science, above all things, because that is what human education consists of.
