Papua New Guinea is an island country in the South western pacific ocean. There is evidence of human settlement as long ago as 35,000 years in what is now Papua New Guinea. It contains the eastern half of New Guinea, The world's second largest island.
In 1975, the country, now united as 'Papua New Guinea', achieved independence from Australia. The country comprises about 600 small islands and only 13 per cent of people live in urban areas.
