Buddha’s Head Sculpture on the Top of the Rock in Mireukseonwon TemplesteemCreated with Sketch.

Meaning of Mireukseonwon is Zenhouse in the name of Maitreya. This temple seems to be the right place for people to meditate quietly in the mountain. It was rebuilt recently.

On the information board, it was written that there was a stone buddha statue, but, I could not find where it was. There was not anyone in the vast temple but a dog. Dogs raised in temples are usually very gentle.
They rarely bark to people.

Then, I met a hiker passing by and asked him where a stone buddha statue was. Walking a little further along the mountain trail, I saw a back of buddha’s head. Buddha’s head was placed on a large rock.

Originally there was an intact Buddha statue, but the body was destroyed later. Guessing by the size of buddha’s head, the entire statue might have ben very huge. Buddha’s nose is black. The material of the stone was black.

Buddha’s body was carved on the rock under the buddha’s head. On another rock next to it, Bodhisattva was carved. There is a cliff below the rock. It was hard to take a whole picture.

The head of the Buddha and the carved body of the rock looks very realistic. It is as if a person is sitting and meditating.
But who or what destroyed the statue of the statue? Is it possible to restore the body of the Buddha? For example, cut out of this rock on which this head very nice pictures @slowwalker

I wonder who destroyed the body of the statue. Hope that it is restored someday.

There are some ancient temples where human traffic is very low.So dogs and other animals live in the vicinity of the temple.!

Posted using Partiko Android

That's right. It is a good place for animals to live in peace.

@slowwalker, Those photography collection very impressive. Seems like most antient temple. I think Buddha body ruined past. But head placed deserve place. Also on the stone they perfectly carved Buddha body like real statue.

There was so much artistic flare in the way they depicted Buddha long ago and far away. It was such a beautiful way of showing their respect. While there are many different entities in this world to worship and praise, I am very much against destroying anybody's means of worship. I can only imagine how amazing Buddha looked with a body beneath that large head. Thank you so much for showing it off and I wish you a very wonderful day.

!tip

You're right! It would have been splendid if this statue wasn't destroyed.

Very nice pictures
And your information about it really great

Yes, it is!!! Thank you :)

Very peaceful place and thanks for sharing but I'm downvoting due to a disagreement with the current rewards.

I'd like to see more from your travel posts considering this is valued at close to $70 at time of commenting and I see travel posts with a lot more information in them that have far less post rewards. Things to include like:

  • a map of where it is
  • how to get there,
  • more information/history/research about the rock carvings
  • religious background/teachings

I'll post more information about rock carvings in next post. Anyway, I'll take your suggestion seriously. Thank you.

Thanks man, I look forward to reading it 💪

Who knows why that statue was destroyed, it might be natural disaster then people could not do anything but I am afraid that it was destroyed by humans as always in our life. One is building up and other destroying the historical heritage. Just like recently it happen at the Syrian site of Palmyra. It is nice to see that still as a reminder there are the remnant of the Buddha statue there .

I hope the remainder of the statue will be preserved well in the future!

Every sculpture is mysterious in its own way. In a way has answers and guides us one way or another.

You're right! Sculptors put their souls into their works!

Sculpture is half done ??? May be the labourers didn't get their wages or they were disturbed by foreign invasion and their kingdom taken over by invaders.

Your theories are plausible! I guessed they were destroyed during many wars.
