Why watch Kdramas

My first post and I am excited. Hello. My name is MJ and I am a black girl who loves Kdramas. Yes, Korean television and everything Korean entertainment. Why or how? For me, it was because I was given the opportunity in my young life to live in Korea and be introduce to Korean entertainment. Well, years later (2008) I jumped back in..by accident and been hooked ever since. Here is my opinion on why I like Korean television and my take on it.

Why? Well, Korean entertainment is different from Western television but did take some pointers from Western television. Dramas: One of Korean main source of entertainment are just like its name, drama. Dramas are similar to our everyday television; day dramas are like soap operas; they have sitcom dramas (which I have yet to watch); prime time dramas that are like our prime time television but add in the soap opera feel in my opinion. And unlike Western TV, most Kdramas only have one season. Which I love.
Variety Shows: Variety shows are like our game shows, talk shows and reality shows. Unlike our shows, they are old school slap stick comedy style and more family friendly.

Korean reality tv is way different from Western television. It is more conservative and informative. No fights or yelling matches like the Bravo reality tv. There is a main point to the show: meaning the show is not just to give an insight of stars or people but a reason. One show is about stars who live alone. The show follows them around and ask why they chose to live alone. Since Korean is a society where children live with their parents till they get married, this reality show wanted to explore a different societal norm. They have a show called Real Men where stars join the military and documents their experience.

There are also food shows which has become real popular over the past few years. There is also audition music shows similar to American Idol and The Voice. I even think they have a Korean version of the Voice. Lately they have been a surge of music reality shows for idols (a specific set or type of artist) who did not make it in the industry or not big. A rebut project.

I love Korean entertainment because it is different and I am able to learn more about a culture I love. One of my favorite shows is Running Man. It has me laughing till my stomach hurts. A full hour of adult man hunt with different missions plus slap stick is amazing.
