Kosher Tax

The "Kosher tax" (or "Jewish tax") is the idea that unwilling food companies and unwitting consumers are forced to pay money to support the Jewish religion or Zionist causes and Israel through the costs of kosher certification. This claim is generally considered a conspiracy theory, antisemitic canard, or urban legend and is mainly spread by antisemitic, white supremacist, and other extremist organizations.

Common refutations include: because consumers who prefer kosher foods include not only Jews, but also Muslims, Seventh-day Adventists, and others, food companies actively seek kosher certification to increase market share and profitability; the fees collected support the certifying organizations themselves; extra business generated by the voluntary certification process more than makes up for the cost of supervision, hence the certification does not necessarily increase the price of products, and may in fact result in per item cost savings.[1]

Because food producers must hire the services of a Rabbi to inspect and verify that they comply with these strict regulations, organizations like The Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations collect a fee for their services. This fee adds to the cost of producing the food, which is, of course, passed along to the end consumer as a so-called "Kosher Tax".

Exposing the Kosher tax is important because the majority of Americans do not know what the Kosher Tax symbol on food packaging truly stands for. The tax may be minuscule, but millions of Americans are paying it unknowingly. The people should not be forced to pay any tax that they are not aware of. People who do not practice Judaism should not unknowingly pay a tax to a group they have no affiliation with.
