일본식 정원은 한눈에 봐도 잘 정돈돼 있다. 정원의 나무는 보는 이의 시선에 맞춰 심어져 있고, 나뭇가지는 정원사의 가위질 흔적이 조형미를 더한다. 나무와 더불어 각종 석물(石物)과 깔끔한 흑백 조약돌로 꾸민 정원은 아름답기 그지없다. 그러나 이는 어디까지나 ‘관상용’이며 ‘인공적’이다.
