On August 26, Krakatoa's initial explosion destroyed two thirds of the island. But four other eruptions on August 27 that began at 5:30 am are more devastating.

As reported by History.com, the explosion was heard as far as 3,000 miles or about 4838 kilometers with ash soaring to a height of 50 miles (80 kilometers). The eruption of Krakatau is equated with a 1,300 megaton explosive force.

Dust from the explosion of the mountain even makes the dark as if the sun sets. The explosion also made the temperature around the world down a few degrees.

According to an estimated 36,000 people died from the eruption, with about 31 thousand of them caused by the tsunami. The tsunami waves recorded as high as 120 feet and swept small islands nearby.

In addition to Krakatau, which is still active today, Indonesia still has 130 other active volcanoes. Indonesia is noted to have the most active volcanoes compared to any country.
