진화의 메커니즘 역시 유전자 레벨에서의 발현 빈도의 무작위적인 변화에서 시작된다. 말하자면 유전자 레벨에서도 제비뽑아 발현 여부를 결정하는 셈이며(변이의 유전자 부동), 이는 환경에 따라 특정 방향으로 편향될 수 있다(자연 선택).
