광장시장(Gwangjang Market)

The largest traditional market in Seoul, located at Jongno 5, Yeji-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul. The official name is 'Jongno Gwangjang Traditional Market'.

It is Korea's first established traditional trading market. Gwangjang Co., Ltd. was established in 1904 and is one of the oldest companies in Korea.

The name Gwangjang is derived from the fact that Gwangjang market is located between Gwangjang and Janggyo, located in Cheonggyecheon 3 and 4 street. Therefore, Hanja also writes 廣 藏, not 廣場. However, in 1905, when he was granted permission to open a market, he named Dongdaemun Market.

서울특별시 종로구 예지동 종로 5가변에 위치해있는 서울 최대 재래시장. 정식명칭은 '종로광장 전통시장'.

대한민국 최초로 설립한 전통 거래시장이다. 회사의 운영주체인 주식회사 광장은 1904년에 설립하여 대한민국에서 가장 오래된 기업 중 하나이기도 하다.

광장이라는 이름의 유래는 청계천 3,4가에 있던 광교와 장교로 광장시장의 위치가 이 두 다리 사이에 있다고 하여 붙인 것. 따라서 한자도 廣場이 아닌 廣藏을 쓴다. 다만 1905년에 시장개설허가를 받을 때에는 동대문 시장이라는 명칭을 썼다고 한다. (출처 : 나무위키)

It is Gwangjang market where I used to drink in Sinchon and eat Bingdae cakes when I was a college student. I did not know that it was the biggest traditional market in Seoul and it was late at night in those days and I did not even know that there were many people like this.

예전 대학생 시절 신촌에서 술 먹다가 한번씩 놀러와서 빈대떡을 먹었던 광장시장입니다. 그 시절에는 밤 늦게 와서 그런지 서울 최대규모 재래시장인지도 몰랐고 이렇게 사람이 많은지도 몰랐는데 이렇게 휴일에 오니 사람이 엄청나군요.

There were dumplings, tteokbokki, fishcake, jokbal(porkfoot), bindaedduck(pancakes), sundae and even sushi on the market.

시장에는 만두, 떡볶이, 어묵, 족발, 빈대떡, 순대 심지어 회도 팔고 있었습니다.

There are so many foods, I went a restaurant and ordered.

그냥 보고만 지나가기에는 아쉬워, 중간에 식당 한군데에 들러 주문을 했습니다.

I ordered ttuckbokki, kimbob, bindaettuck, and sundaegukbob. The taste was ordinary taste that can be seen in the general market.
떡볶이, 마약김밥, 빈대떡, 순대국밥을 주문했다. 맛은 그냥 평범한정도였다.

It was a meaningful visit to a few places where you can see the modern Seoul, which is neither very traditional nor very modern.
아주 전통적이지도, 그렇다고 아주 현대적이지도 않은 근대적인 서울의 모습을 볼 수 있는 몇 안되는 장소로 의미있는 탐방이었다.
