A middle-aged couple have given birth to triplets after four heartbreaking miscarriages and spending US$15,000 (£11,300) on IVF.
Leonie Fitzgerald, a business owner in Brisbane, Australia, became a mother of three perfect girls at the age of 44. Diagnosed with low progesterone, she refused to give up hope, leading to four devastating miscarriages.
But Leonie and her husband Peter, 51, tried to have a baby again in January 2020 with the help of IVF.

They became the proud parents of baby Charlotte weighing 4 oz 2 (approx. 1.87 kg) and twins Liliana and Isabella weighing 2 lb 6 oz (approx 1.07 kg) on August 23 last year. and 3 lb 5 oz (approximately 1.5 kg) respectively.
"We've been trying for a baby for almost six years," Leonie said.
"It took me almost three years to conceive naturally at 41, we were ecstatic but our joy quickly turned to grief when I miscarried at 13 weeks."
“We decided that IVF was our only option and were filled with faith again. You never expect it to work until it doesn't.
“I miscarried three more times, once with IVF and twice naturally. Our dreams of becoming parents were dashed. "
Leonie describes her journey to motherhood as a "lonely experience" as abortion is a "taboo" subject.
After her second round of IVF, Leonie quit her stressful job and started her own business in property investment and wealth.
Adoption was not an option for the couple as the waiting period was five years - they felt they were "too old".
Despite spending around 55,000 pounds sterling (US$75,000) on acupuncture, herbs and many other healers and specialists, the couple had no baby boom.
Leonie said: “It wasn't until I saw a physiologist who predicted I would have twins that we started to accept that we weren't meant to be parents.
"It was our third and final round of IVF and it worked."
Recalling the moment the ultrasound revealed three heartbeats, Leonie said: “It was definitely third time lucky. I remember we looked at each other and smiled.
“I was in complete shock and for the next week I walked around like a zombie. But we believe in life you get what you want rather than what you want,” she said.
“We had to upgrade our house from three beds to five beds. And also bought an eight seater car!
Leonie admitted to feeling "terrified" if she lost children due to her age.
She spent most of her pregnancy on bed rest due to morning sickness before giving birth at 32 weeks and six days.
However, the labor was not straightforward as Leoni fell into an induced coma for 16 hours after a seizure and increased heart rate.
The triplets spent 34 days in the NICU before heading home with their loving parents.
Leonie said: “I was quite disconnected from them because I didn't get the first kiss. But we bonded because I sat by their side when they were in the NICU.
“Peter and I didn't grow up around children, so we only knew support from nurses. Taking them home is so true - we don't know where to start.
“In the beginning they were using 10 nappies a day and 24 bottles of milk a day. "Sometimes we have to keep 1000 nappies at home at one time," she said.

"We are lucky to have a nanny who comes four days a week and to have support from our family and friends."
