The jackfruit trees here were planted at the doctor's house in Puhulwella by my grandfather, Jiris Baddegamage, in the 1940s... Mr. Arthur V. Dios had given him by post to plant these rare jackfruit seeds... these jackfruit trees were planted in a very short period of time in the 50s and 60s. The old people of the village have told me that the old people of the village used to tie the trees to the supporting trees to prevent them from falling.

Uncle Jack's precious mission!
Kozmama aka Arthur V Dies who performed a priceless service for Mother Luck
This is a note about his actions!
A date in the mid-1930s. Reginald Edward Stubbs, who is coming to open an agricultural exhibition in Tihari, is a gentleman dressed in white who is preparing to receive the British governor. He does not have the usual garlands or garlands in his hand. There is a small dress made of combed flowers.
He welcomed the Governor and addressed the festival council and said:
"I can't even imagine a flower as tall as Panamala, which grew from the jackfruit tree, which our people call the rice tree."
His name is Mr. Arthur V. Dies. On February 11, 1886 AD, Mr. Jeremiah Dies of Ponnahannadi, who was a philanthropic businessman in Panadura, gave birth to Patthini Hannadi's Varnadiptia Kurukulasuriya Mrs. Celestina Rodrigo, the son named Prince Arthur Vincent Dies.
Dies completed his basic education at Panadura St. John's College and joined St. Thomas College in Mt. After his schooling, he contributed to his father's business activities.
Internationalism was inculcated in Arthur Dies from childhood. When he was young, he saw the cost of the British opening museums all over the country to make the nation blue. He directly contributed to the temperance movement and was imprisoned by the British on the pretext of the 1915 Sinhalese Muslim riots and later convicted by the court. However, after paying a large fine and getting freed from prison, Mr. Diez's feeling of swaraj came out.
Arthur V. Dies, the vision of becoming "Cosmama" grows in his mind with a mind-blowing vision.
One day, while standing in the hall of his house, he saw huge jackfruit tree trunks being carried by cattle in heavy carts. The way these huge trees, which have helped both sides with the environment and man for many years, were cut down and taken away created a feeling in his heart. Thinking that it is a national crime to destroy a national food, jackfruit, he started a new campaign to plant jackfruit plants.
Mr. Dies, who roamed around Niyangam, continued his business by distributing jackfruit seeds, encouraging them to plant and raising a voice against jackfruit cutting. It is said that his aim was to cultivate a million kosgas. He was tactful to get the support of the ruling class to achieve this goal.
Mr. Diez requested the government to send kosya by free mail and to plant kosgas on both sides of the highway, but those proposals were rejected. During this period, a marriage took place between a relative of Sir John Kotalawala, who was a minister at the time, and a cousin of Mr. Diez. Foods made from jackfruit were crowned among the meals in the Sinhalese caste wedding. Mr. Dies also gave a parcel of jackfruit to the wedding couple as a gift. The chief guest of the festival, the Minister of Kotalawala was happy to see the efforts of Mr. Dies and gave permission to send jackfruits free of charge throughout the country and to plant them on the sides of the roads.
It is said that Sri Lanka did not feel the food crisis that occurred in various countries during the Second World War as a result of Mr. Diez's efforts to create a self-sufficient country. Apart from the spread of Jackfruit, plants like Cosmama, Papaya Mango Abarella have also been distributed.
Kosmama also initiated an intellectual war that did not burn the cultivation war. Following in the footsteps of his mother Celestina Rodrigo, a program was also started to establish Buddhist schools in Lakdiva. Colleges like Panadura Sri Sumangala, Colombo Ananda, Ambalangoda Dharmashoka, Kandy Dharmaraja reaped its great fruits.
Mr. Dies is also considered to be the first person to sign a check in Sinhala. He was knighted by the British but refused it. Later governments tried to give him councilor titles, but he respectfully refused them as before.
Mr. Diez is married to Miss Eugene Salgado. The couple were lucky to be the parents of nine sons and daughters.
Arthur Vinson Dies, alias Kosmama, who performed a great service for the people of Lakma, closed his eyes forever on July 31, 1960 AD, while making Lakma pure. It must be said that he is a son who owes no debt to the country in the truest sense of the word.
