Pirate Republic

During the golden age of piracy, the Caribbean region had several pirate havens, if not tipples. New Providence, Totooga, Port Royal, Rhode Island, Barbados, Ile-a-Vache and Petit Goâve were the main locations in the Bahamas. These places were useful for selling loot and materials, getting supplies like food, water, recreation, repairing ships and hiding in case of emergency.
Among these, the most important settlements were New Providence, Tortuga and Port Royal. It also made New Providence special. Centered around Nassau Harbor on the New Providence Islands in the Bahamas, the pirate base became known as the Pirate Republic.
Nassau, a small island, had been a small pirate center since the 1670s. Gradually, the pirates from Totooga migrated to New Providence and with the destruction of Port Royal, Nassau became the main pirate base.
New Providence has been a haven for pirates since the days of British rule. Often British governors resorted to taking bribes from pirates. A prime example is when Henry Every returned from the Indian Ocean in 1696 when Governor Nicolas Trout bribed him to allow the ship Fancy into Nassau Harbor. Also, Nassau was known as a safer fort for the privateers who served the British government, and it was more dominated by pirates than the British government.
In 1701, during the War of the Spanish Succession in Europe for the succession to the Spanish throne, in 1703 a combined Franco-Spanish fleet attacked British-held Nassau. After another attack in 1706, most of the island's residents left, and so did the British government. It was then dominated by pro-British privateers. As a result, Nassau was repeatedly attacked by the Spanish.
Although the war ended in 1713, many privateers did not stop looting. As a result, Nassau became a permanent pirate stronghold after many pirates arrived there. It was one of the most powerful pirate strongholds in the region at the time, with Bermuda's governor reporting that there were over 1,000 pirates and only about 100 townspeople.
2 groups of two main pirate captains operated in Nassau. Captain Benjamin Hornigold's gang is one of them. Under him were pirates like Sam Bellamy, Sted Bonnet and Blackbeard.
The other party were Charles Vane, Jack Racham, Anne Bonny and Mary Read under Captain Henry Jennings.
After 1716, Blackbeard was the magistrate of Nassau Fort until its collapse. The entire fort was governed by their code of conduct called the Pirate Code. The Nassau Pirates consisted of privateers who became privateers after the war, those who came to plunder the treasure fleet of 1715, mutinous sailors and slaves on merchant ships.

By 1717, Governor Woods Rogers was sent to the Bahamas to suppress Caribbean piracy. Under his rule, the Pirate Republic was brought to an end. In 1717, King Jorge's amnesty to pirates was announced to Nassau by Captain Winston Pearse of HMS Phoenix. In 1718, Governor Woods Rogers and Winston Pears arrived in Nassau in several ships, where 209 pirates accepted the royal pardon and were taken into government custody.
