Dharahara, also known as the Bhimsen Tower, is a historic tower in Kathmandu, Nepal. Originally constructed in 1832 by the then Prime Minister of Nepal, Bhimsen Thapa, the tower served as both a military watchtower and a symbol of national pride. Standing at 61.88 meters, it was an iconic structure with nine floors and a spiral staircase leading to a viewing deck that offered panoramic views of the Kathmandu Valley.
The original Dharahara was heavily damaged by the devastating earthquake in 1934, but it was subsequently rebuilt. Tragically, the tower was again destroyed during the massive earthquake that struck Nepal on April 25, 2015. This disaster left only the base and part of the structure intact, claiming numerous lives as the tower collapsed.
In the years following the 2015 earthquake, there were concerted efforts to rebuild Dharahara. The reconstruction aimed to restore the tower to its former glory while incorporating modern engineering techniques to enhance its earthquake resistance. The new structure, inaugurated in 2021, closely mirrors the design of the original but includes contemporary safety features and a small museum to educate visitors about its history.
Dharahara holds significant cultural and historical value for Nepal. It is not just an architectural landmark but a testament to the resilience and enduring spirit of the Nepalese people. The rebuilt tower stands as a symbol of national identity and recovery, attracting both locals and tourists who come to appreciate its historical significance and the stunning views it offers.
