QEMU/KVM is a powerful combination , when tweaked right of course . It was nearly 2 years since I decided to dump my physical i7-3770k gaming machine and make it a completely virtualized instance . I used an FX-8350 for VFIO at first , because that was what I had available , but since the CPU raw power was the most important part for virtualization that machine performed poorly for obvious reasons .
Then I decided to use an i5-3570 (If memory serves me right) , but I was able to only use 1 virtual machine because of the lack of PCI-E lanes .
Enter X99! This platform is great for VFIO/QEMU/KVM . It supports IOMMU , and more PCI-E lanes . I went with ASUS X99-Deluxe + i7-5930k that performed great compared to the previous 2 platforms . But it got fried out of sudden , both the CPU and Motherboard . It was because of an old power supply I was using . Next , I purchased an ASUS X99-E WS + i7-5820k , this motherboard has PLX PCI-E bridges and tons of PCI-E slots too . Been using it since then (With an updated power supply of course).
These are some screenshots I took during gameplay .
