Raccoon dogs photographed in 2014 (by virologist Eddie Holmes) and December 2019 (by an anonymous Chinese resident) respectively in the Huanan market in Wuhan. The recent analysis isn't public yet, but reportedly ties genetic samples of the raccoon dog and the coronavirus in the same location in the market.
This isn't definitive proof of a zoonotic spillover origin, but it is the closest we've gotten to a possible animal intermediary. Raccoon dogs are among several animals that are known to be capable of SARS-COV-2 infection besides humans.
The lack of an animal intermediary has been a sticking point for the lab leak theory proponents. But finding the animal host is more difficult than lab leak proponents suggest. We still haven't found the host of Ebola in 50 years and we may never. Both SARS-COV-1 and MERS originated from animals (civets and camels respectively). China has notably made it difficult to collect samples for animal testing as they do not want either theory to be correct- China would prefer the origin of SARS-COV-2 occurred outside China.
