I recently obtained the coolest guidebooks ever - two utterly thorough volumes on New York state (500-odd pages!) with an obsession for every last obscure barbed-wire ditch that makes even Chris Sladden look slack. Every page seems to have a 'I crawled out of this through the snow, with broken legs'-type story but the effect is comical, rather than macho. Even if you never visit NY state, these are worth a read...
