So your baby isn’t gaining weight…

in lactation •  3 years ago

I’m not a lactation consultant but I’ve given birth to 6 kids. Only one had trouble with weight gain.

I tried everything
*Lactation cookies- great another 20 milliliters
*flax seed and fish oil - a few more milliliters

  • vibration and heat stimulation- put my baby to sleep - no significant improvement

I massaged my breast and hand expressed in desperation. Barely got an ounce extra for all my effort. Water helped a little.

My child was barely skimming the bottom of the curve. Finally, a couple things changed first I found out my son wasn’t latching correctly. Tip: make sure their mouth is wide open when they latch. Second my son was getting too much supplementing in the morning. Also, my son likes the football position best.

But what helped the most was discovering the concept of supply and demand. The more the baby removes the more my body makes. So why did this help so much? Easy I simply had someone else remove the excess milk! MY PARTNER. I simply gave my kid a bottle put him to sleep and had my partner suck all the milk out. The next day the milk came streaming out. I felt so much better. My baby was crying less and I was sleeping better knowing my baby could get enough milk from my breast.

He goes back to the doctor Tuesday but I have already weighed him and I know he is better and more content.
