60 Years Ago Today, Laika Became The First Dog To Enter Space Onboard Sputnik 2. This Is How.
After the success of Sputnik 1 - launched on October 4, 1957 - the Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev ordered a dog be flown into space within a month. There wasn't enough time but the engineers sealed Laika into a space capsule called Sputnik 2. On November 3, the dog journeyed into space.
And that was the last time anyone saw her. The engineers hadn't found a way of bringing back her alive.
The dogs received their training. To get them ready for the tiny space capsule, they were kept for days and weeks in smaller and smaller containers. They were hurled around in centrifuges. They were shut in boxes and subjected to the noise they would hear in takeoff. All the while, researchers took careful measurements of their stress, pain and fear.
