Red Fort (Urdu: Lal Qalah; Urdu: لال قلعہ; English: Red Fort) A fort built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in the old Delhi (now Delhi, India) walled city in the seventeenth century. Until 1857, this fort was the capital of the Mughal empire. Then, when the British Indian government exiled the Mughal Emperor Bahadur Shah, the Indian capital was shifted to Calcutta. By 1947 the British used this fort as a military camp. Currently it is a popular tourist center and a strong symbol of the sovereignty of the Indian Republic: On the occasion of Indian Independence Day, Indian Prime Minister hovers the national flag at a place adjacent to the Lahore Gate of Red Fort. In 2007, the red fort was elected as UNESCO World Heritage Site.
