Reviving a lampshade, a lost art. But less stressful then restoring life to another being.

Julie Seams To Be recovering an antique lampshade.

I'm not what you would call a materialistic person. Although I do think that some possessions are worth revitalizing for some people. Things that have meaning to them, like an antique lampshade that fits and looks perfect on a lamp that was handed down to them through the generations.

How to do that, well it's a process. Especially since it is probably rusted all the way through the deteriorated fabric surrounding the frame.

The first step is tearing off all the fabric and twill, yes if it is a handcrafted lampshade the metal is covered with twill tape to sew the fabric onto.

And yes, it will be in nasty shape!

Once it's all cleaned off there is the frame itself to contend with. This will include sanding off rust and coating the frame with new paint and primer.

Then a new wrapping of twill tape.

Now comes the part that is the most enjoyable. Watching it come back to it's original life with new fabric. A pattern needs to be made from the measurements covering each section. Sewn together and slipped over the frame. Then sewn in place.

The inside lining is done differently, it doesn't have to meet up with the outside fabric, it would probably get some ideas if it did. Since the lining needs to be a stretch fabric with a lot of give, unlike the outer shade fabric. The pattern to cut for that is simply the diameter of the bottom and top of the shade with a seam allowance. Then stitch that on.

The last thing to do is trim it out! You can use ribbon or gimp and glue it in place with fringe adhesive or a glue gun. Whatever suits the style of the lamp.
