For some unknown reason, one of the funniest children programs that I remember from my childhood is "Lancelot Link, Secret Chimp." When I mention it to some of my peers today, they look at me as if I have two heads. It debuted in the fall of 1970 and used live chimpanzees that acted out the scenes while being voiced by actors off camera. It was sort of a parody of "Get Smart." Lance Link and Mata Hairi worked under Commander Darwin for A.P.E. (Agency to Prevent Evil). As you hear the names of the characters and agencies, you get the feel of the satirical nature of the show.
The villains for the most part fell under the umbrella of C.H.U.M.P. (Criminal Headquarters for the Underworld's Master Plan). Some of the evil-doers included Baron Von Butcher with his slimy chauffeur Creto, Dr. Strangemind, Dragon Woman, Wang Fu, Ali Assa Seen and the Duchess.
If that wasn't all, these chimps had a band known as The Evolution Revolution. They actually had a record released containing the single "Sha-La Love You." That single was originally written for The Grass Roots. The band's musical style was bubblegum, with a touch of hard rock. They had a very psychedelic appearance.
Bernie Kopell, famous for his portrayal of a doctor on "The Love Boat," voiced three of the villains. His vocal talent was used for Baron Von Butcher, Creto and Wang Fu. Interestingly enough, Kopell also played Siegfried on the television series "Get Smart." There is proof of the existence of this show on the internet. I know that I wasn't having a nightmare!
