TreeTuesday - Old Oaks

in landscapephotography •  7 years ago  (edited)

Old twisted Cork Oak trees by the road. We stopped on a side of a small country dirt roat to have a little break and enjoy the view (and most of all to take some photos).

Those are the trees that produce cork (duhh) the one you see in wine bottles, under your glasses, in floor isolation... all kinds of things!

It is the bark of the tree that is taken off. You see the tree on the right? The bottom part is skinnier and darker - this is where the bark was removed in 2015. Then the number is painted to that in 10 years it can be take off again.

Love this post, I had no idea about this process! I love how it is so visible where the cork was taken and it's nice to know they let the tree recover before doing it again!

The skin right after the take the bark is almost red... so intensive. There are large cork farms like that and the cork is taken off from just some trees every year. So you can see the bark growing back in all kinds of stages. Pretty cool :D

Wow amazing, I would love to see some sometime!

Only in Portugal ;)

Awww that's a shame, I have been to Portugal twice too, and didn't see them then either!

South of Portugal. They have them in Morocco too... maybe south Spain.. not sure.

Oh right! Well I have always wanted to go to Morocco!

Now you have an excuse ;)

Wow. It takes 10 years to grow back? I never realised it took that long. They are lovely trees.

Yeaaa... it takes really long. The bark looks almost like it was never removed after 10 years. Its quite amazing that they trees do that and regrow like this.
