Hello my Steeming Pals!
Italiano

My contribution to #landscapephotography is the picture above taken just over a year ago in Pakistan on route to Gilgit, via the Karakoram Highway.
The stunning scenery along this small slither of a road that connects the plains around Islamabad with the border to China, offers endless opportunities for some amazing shots. Mountains, forests, raging rivers, the highway has it all for the traveller to behold.
The peaks of the Himalayas are all around and are absolutely dominant in every direction one looks. Where snow caps the mountains tops elevations hover around seven thousand metres. However, there is no need to climb that high to experience the pleasures of altitude. Even at the much lower elevations of around four thousand metres, along the highway path, an annoying head ache can persist for several days with those unacclimatised to lack of oxygen.
Pakistanis are warm, hospitable folk and they are even more so in the areas of Baltistan and Hunza. The local cuisine has interesting offerings to indulge in, too (Dal Rice!).
The journey to the Chinese border from Islamabad takes at least three days if not longer. The length of the Karakoram Highway is in fact approximately at least 1300km depending on the chosen route and many sections of it are in a state of constant maintenance due to the effects of ice, land slides and rock falls. Teams of locals painstakingly take care of the road clearing it from debris, filling the cratered areas and safeguarding travellers on this vital, strategic route across the tallest mountain range in the world.
