Are Cairns Becoming a "Thing"?

in landscapephotography •  6 years ago

Today, @dmcamera posted about the Latest Tourist Craze In Reykjavik Iceland, noting that "hundreds of cairns have suddenly appeared and multiplied by the day" creating mixed feelings for the locals who, like those in @dmcamera's native country of Scotland and in other Celtic countries consider cairn building to be an ancient practice used to mark routes of travel. Please read her post to learn more about the significance of cairns and local thoughts about these "tourist cairns" popping up.

I took these picture on the beach at Ventura, California. I used to see rock balancing around the beach, where rocks were stacked in unbelievable ways that seemed to defy gravity. When I saw these cairns, I just assumed they were elementary rock stacking, but maybe there's more to it. Are any of you finding modern cairns where you live? Have you built one? Why did you build one, or what do you think they signify?

Wow! interesting.
Exception...

Thanks for taking a look @fatima92.

So, all these stacked up rocks/stones are called Cairns? I learned something new today. Thank you.
I have never stacked one. When I first saw them years ago, I thought they were art installations and I believed they were glued together. Then I saw a video of a guy actually doing it. I was amazed. I guess they are more common now as they have become more visible.

Thank @dmcamera. It was her post that educated me. Did you see them at home, or on a trip to Spain?

I saw them on Facebook. haha...

That's too funny!

What do you call a single stone placed to mark the way?

Answer: a unicairn!

LOL XD

Nice creativity Sir
