This Curbar Edge in Derbyshire's peak district National Park.

When you're climbing up, or walking this and adjoining Froggatt Edge, amongst many others, it could be easy for the unininitiated to think these edges had been created by maybe very violent movement in the earths tectonic plates way, way, way back.

Well although the earths crust did move quite a bit after the oceans had receded, however when we look down on the Peak District range of mountains from satellites or from aircraft on a very clear day, it becomes quite clear that once upon a time there had been vast amounts of water flowing through them, and in fact these jutting edges of Grit Stone Rock had been, over a long period of time, built up by layer upon layer upon layer of silt during a time when their was a huge ancient delta. The silt and sedement that forms these long cliff edges would have changed with seasons and heavy snowmelts, which is perhaps why we can see distinct thin layers as the winds and rains over the many, many years erodes them.

The grit stone was a popular stone and had been mined in the area since medevil times for building and construction.
