You Can Find a Tsunami's Legacy at Barley Cove, Co. Cork

180417-irl-c-071.jpg

Barley Cove in Co. Cork is perhaps the best-loved beach in West Cork. It's a wonderful place for a family day out in pleasant weather. It can also be a ferocious place when the weather is stormy.

This image was made on a benign day. Often the middle of the day isn't the best time to photograph the landscape. But when you get the kind of clouds you see here, you are presented with all sorts of opportunities.

In 1755, the Great Lisbon Earthquake generated a tsunami that caused widespread damage, even as far north as Ireland. The extensive sand dunes at Barley Cove are said to be a legacy of the tsunami.
