Africa #3: The Panorama Route with it's magnificent Blyde River

The Panorama Route is one of South Africas most picturesque highways. It starts in Graskop, leading through the fissured plateaus of the Drakensberge with viewpoints and waterfalls all along the way, ending at the breathtaking Blyde River Canyon. Our first stop was at the Mac Mac Falls a few miles south of Graskop. They are worth a visit for sure, just a five minute walk from the parking lot.Mac Mac Falls

Then we drove towards God’s Window with a short stop at the viewpoint “Pinnacle”. Unfortunately it was so cloudy at God’s Window that we couldn’t see anything. But there are some short hike through a rainforest, which are highly recommended!

On the way to the Blyde River Canyon we did some short stops at the Lisbon Falls and the Berlin Falls, both worth a visit (and they are almost on the way 😉).

The highlight of the Panorama Route comes at the end: The spectacular Blyde River Canyon with its iconic “Three Rondavels”. The perfect spot for lunch.Blyde River Canyon

After lunch we decided to visit the Echo Caves, which are located near the Blyde River Canyon. They are worth a visit but not a must-see. The same goes for the former gold digger town Pilgrim’s Rest.Echo Caves

So that was our experience in Mpumalanga, tomorrow we head towards the Indian Ocean at Sodwana Bay for some diving!
