Another Bonsai Rock, Lake Tahoe photo... But A Very Different Look! - Which One Do You Like Best?

in landscapephotography •  7 years ago

Yesterday I posted a nice Bonsai Rock photo at sunrise with a colorful sky. Today, I am sharing a photo shot the same morning at the same spot, but with a very different look.

Shooting a colorful sunset or sunrise is usually my goal when I head over to Tahoe's east shore, but when I arrive at a location early, I tend to shoot anyway. Sometimes the long exposure shots you can get at the lake before a sunrise or after a sunset can be really cool.

The exposure time for this photo was 264 seconds, or about a four and a half minute long shot. The long exposure helps "smear" the clouds as they move across the sky giving a wild look to this shot. The long exposure also helps smooth out the surface of the water and gives it an eerie calm look. This was shot on a Canon 5Dsr with a 24-105mm lens set at 24mm. The ISO was 50 and the aperture was f22. A tripod was used and I believe I used a polarizing filter and a graduated neutral density filter which can help lengthen the exposure time but it was super early in the morning and I don't quite remember, lol.

Below is the photo I posted yesterday, and here is it's post with more details in case you missed it: Bonsai Rock, Lake Tahoe. This One Is For @Shadalene's #WaterWednesday Contest

Which of the two looks that were shot on the same morning do you like best?

My vote is for the lower one due to the different textures, colors and contrasts. The tan colored, round rocks in the foreground set the stage for the seafoam colored water and pastel skies! The rock island in the photo is interestingly shaped like a boat. Stunning image!

Nice, thank you @ninahaskin! It's a pretty cool looking rock, fun to shoot.

It depends on what I would do with the photo, but I like the bottom one more due to the color and nice foreground.

Good call! The blue one would be great for licensing to someone who needs a background image where they will have a lot of text on top of it. The bottom one would probable look better as a big print on the wall.

I like them both. If I was Mario in Super Mario 64, I'd jump through both of those canvases in the hopes of exploring the dreamy imagination lands beyond. I would probably die a lot.

Haha! Our lake's "Tahoe Tessie" would be the villain at the end of the level that would surely kill you...

Sightings describe Tessie as being between 10 and 80 feet long

Oh. So it's either fairly unremarkable or fucking terrifying. I can't wait to visit Lake Tahoe!

Oh it's terrifying. 10 feet.... Ha! That's fake news, Tahoe Tessie is huge!

Thank you so much for sharing your photography. I really get a lot out of seeing your work. You definitely set the bar ;) I have no idea how to use my Nikon D70 so your instruction on settings is very helpful as well.

I think that both your images impart different feelings/experience. The first one with it's cool blues draws you outwardly/expands while the warm colors of the second one, draws the viewer into the experience of textured stones, water and sky.

They are both truly beautiful but imbue different qualities .

Nice! Thank you @youhavewings! I will try to keep posting the settings with my images, along with a little bit of a reason why I chose the setting. Cheers!
