Why I Won't Be Shooting Lupine Wildflower Photos This Year...

in landscapephotography •  6 years ago

Lake Tahoe can get some incredible Lupine blooms this time of year. They have a tall purple/blue flower that are an incredible subject matter. The Lupine have provided me with many great images over the years. However... I will not be shooting them this year. Why not you ask???

Below is what my favorite Lupine wildflower field looks like when the flowers are blooming. It is an area at Lake Forest Beach, just outside of Tahoe City. (Location tagged using @steemitworldmap, look for the link in the comments.)

Notice the arrow pointing at the sign in the photo above. Now take a look at the same sign in the photo below. I shot the photo below yesterday after I photographed a house for sale in that neighborhood. The lake level is very high this year! Lupine only bloom on low lake level years for obvious reasons, when the lake level is high, they are underwater and don't grow.

So yeah... That's why I'm not photographing the Lupine this year. I guess that high lake level years make them more special when they do bloom big. They would have to let a lot of water out of Lake Tahoe's one outlet dam in order for them to bloom next year. My guess is that it will be at least a couple years before we see them again. If we have another big snow year, it may be even longer. But in the meantime, there are plenty of other wildflowers to photograph around here.

Have a great and photogenic weekend!!!

Thank you for looking and reading!

@scottshots Lupine are illusive this year.

Yeah they are. I've seen a few around town but not really in photogenic locations. We get a smaller little lupine up here also and many of them are growing around but they aren't nearly as impressive looking. Cheers!

@scottshots Thanks for reply. I might be heading your way soon. I'll email you when I'm in the area. Couple of weeks though.

Oh cool! Good thing it's a couple weeks as I'll be heading out of town until Monday. Hope to meet up with you!

what kind of a photographer would you be if you let a little water stop you.

I suggest you stand there, right there... and wait for them to bloom.
... any second now...

Coming, any...
... second...
now...

Bring snacks, this might take a while.

Ok, I waited waited and waited and you were right! They grew and bloomed right out of the water!!!

Just kiddin' :) This was from a year that they had bloomed but then the lake level rose and flooded them. It was a pretty cool year for photography there.

Oh thats a cool shot @scottshots. Love it with the stars.

Thank you @thraellock! It was a fun one to take.

Wow did the tide come in or what! lol
Looks like plenty of rain and snow filled her up!!

I like what @ogc said! LOL

Haha! Looks like the tide right? Scuba gear is now on the wish list...

Thank you!!!!

OMG This is Damn Beautiful

It's a great location when the lake is low.

Far out that's some real noticeable water level increase! Those flowers look beautiful though, fingers crossed for some blooms next year :)

Hardly any room on the beaches around the lake this year. I'm not sure what all the tourists are going to do this summer... Yes, fingers crossed!

why is it so high this year? It didn't snow more than last year?

I believe last year it had to fill up, and there wasn't really much Lupine to shoot last year either. This year it was already fairly full when the snow started melting. I also heard that they weren't able to drain much out of the lake yet because all the tributaries were flowing fast and the Truckee River (Tahoe's only outlet) is running fairly full, if they let too much out from the dam certain areas along the river flood. There are beach areas around the lake that have no beach this year.

Beautiful tones, very good framing! Congratulations

Thank you @jcphotography! Glad you like that one.

Well, I do have a waterproof case for my camera, maybe scuba gear is next! Haha!
