Marathi (मराठी) -Language you should know before visiting india.

Hello friend myself Deval Shirsat i'm from India and this is my first post on steemit. Choosing this topic "Marathi -Language you should know before visiting India" has a reason. As i'm living in maharashtra and native speaker of marathi , so i decided to write my first article on marathi to educate people from steem community and world as it might help you to learn some basic about marathi if you have plan to visit maharashtra specially Mumbai “The city of dreams”.

Little introduction:

Marathi has third largest number of speakers in India and it ranked 19th in worlds most spoken language. Marathi often use in Maharashtra (state of India). This language also has great history attached with it.

Now i'm going to make you comfortable with language with some basic marathi words and phrases which often use in day to day life of maharashtrian people.

So, lets get started

1)Namaskar (नमस्कार)

"Namskar" can be use as greeting when you meet someone.

2)माझं नाव ______मी इथे नवीन आहे (use this phrase if you meet someone for first time) = Hi am ____, i'm new here

lets break down sentence :

माझं=My , नाव= Name , मी आहे =I am ,इथे=Here, नवीन=New

तुम्ही मला मदत कराल का ?= Could you help me out? (This phrase should be followed by माझं नाव ______मी इथे नवीन आहे)

तुम्ही=You ,मला=Me, मदत=Help ,कराल का=Could

In marathi the sentence structure is not the same as English. In English the sentence structure is subject–verb–object , whereas in marathi it is subject object verb.

But don't worry learning marathi is a fun once you got to know how to use basic words and phrases.Now let's go to third point.

3)मी ______ आलो आहे. (If you want to explain where you are from)= I'm came from______(Ex. USA UK etc.)

मी आहे=I'm ,आलो=Came

So this first 3 are point can help you to start conversation ,to intro yourself and to ask for help from anyone in Maharashtra.

Now without making this article too lengthy here i'm giving you some word and phrase which help you to learn it by yourself.

Words:

Bhau(भाऊ)=Brother
chaha(चहा)=Tea
Rickshaa(रिक्षा) =Auto-Rickshaw
Paise(पैसे) =Money
Shahar(शहर)=City
Rasta(रस्ता) =Road
Gaddi(गाडी) =Bike

Phrases:

Bhau ek cut ghe (भाऊ एक कट घे) = Brother give me one cup of tea(use at tea stall)
Ha patta sangta ka ?( हा पत्ता सांगता का?) = Can you tell me this address?
Rickshaa kuthe bhetel (रिक्शा कुठे भेटेल?)= Where i can get Auto-Rickshaw?

So this are some basic tips to start you journey of learning marathi and i think at entry level this sufficient .
