STEEMITinYORUBA - Ancient Proverbs That Never Grow Old pg. 3

in language •  7 years ago

A continuation of the Yoruba proverbs that have been from time immemorial and lingers on, their tranlations, meanings, usage, and definitions.

PROVERB 2: Adiye funfun ko mo ara re l’agba

TRANSLATION

The white cock doesn’t recognize its superiority
MEANING: This one of the first proverbs I grew to know on this planet. Yorubas believe the white cock to be superior to other cocks, in various rituals and festivities, it is the white cock that is the ideal item for a sacrifice. However, the white cock doesn’t know this, it doesn’t realize it is held in high esteem and thus roams around with other cocks, play like them and feed like them.
The Yorubas use this proverb to reprimand a person who ideally is meant to be superior to the caucus he is keeping or people he is relating to as equals, either as a result of ignorance or circumstance/condition

USAGE/EXAMPLE

An example would be a lady who has attained a marriageable age and ought to be married and isn’t, and such person goes out and parties with girls not yet ripe for marriage. Or a man meant to have a family but due to either joblessness or some other condition is still living like a moving with youngsters. (Yorubas take marriage and family serious, they are seen as signs of maturity and to an extent, achievements)

DEFINITIONS

Adiye = Chicken/Cock, Funfun = White, Agba= Adult/Elder/Superior
