A while ago I set up a Raspberry Pi as a webcam monitoring my front door. It is able to record and send the movie to Dropbox, motion activated.

Works very well and is necessary because I work in the basement and would miss visitors/deliveries otherwise. Also, I like to know to ignore the door if someone is selling something.

One thing that bugged me though was the commercial product for this worked but was too big.

10 mins with illustrator and my laser cutter and I now have a solution that fits perfectly.

Nice solution! Looks pretty innovative. That would be handy. I always try to ignore marketers and salesman as well.

You could probably rig up something too that wasn't as nice with some stuff scavenged from around someone's house with just something sticky, a knife or other tool, and some kinda piece of wood or something.

Yeah, if you have a problem duct tape can't solve then you are not using enough duct tape ;)

I've been looking at getting a video doorbell but they all sucker you into monthly subscriptions so I was considering something like this myself, the problem is making it small enough and have battery life without having to plug it in somewhere unless I can hardwire it into the house doorbell but then I don't want it outside.

My pi is just plugged in to a phone charger inside. No need for a doorbell because I get notified when someone is pulling up in a car or walking up the path due to the motion detecting messaging my phone :)

I really don't want a power cord running down my front door. Nor do I believe I have a plug close by.

Lipo battery or rechargeable USB battery then. You could extend the battery life by making it sleep on a cron if you don't need it on 24/7

Prefer not to have a change a battery for something on my front door. That’s why I’d like to hook into the doorbell power but then your outside with your equipment and tough to compete with tight commercial packages.
