Chechnya's President Ramzan Kadyrov confirmed on Sunday that his soldiers had captured most of the eastern Ukrainian city of Bubasna, while Ukrainian officials said a battle for control of the town in the country was continuing.

In mid-April, Russian forces launched a new offensive along the eastern side of Ukraine, which has recently seen some intense attacks and shelling around Popasna in the Lugansk region.

"Chechen special forces fighters have taken control of most of Popasna...The main streets and central districts of the city have been completely cleared," Kadyrov, who often described himself as a "foot soldier" under the orders of Russian President Vladimir Putin, wrote in a post on the messaging app Telegram.
There was no immediate comment from Ukraine, but Oleksiy Aristovich, an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, said late Saturday that heavy fighting in the town was continuing.
On Saturday, Serhiy Gaidai, governor of the Lugansk region, also said that Ukrainian forces were still in control of the region.

"The situation is very difficult, but it is under control," he added in a video post on Telegram.

He added that the Chechen forces did not participate in the fighting, but they were looting and recording video clips.

Kadyrov has been posting reports and videos on Telegram of Chechen soldiers allegedly participating in activities in Ukraine, but there has been no confirmation of how many have actually been posted and whether they are taking part in the fighting.
