40 YEARS OF STAND UP COMEDY

in laughs •  8 years ago

I have been performing stand up comedy professionally for over 40 YEARS and I have always been asked many questions about it. The question I have been asked the most is, "What does it feel like being on stage performing stand up comedy?" My answer is imagine the wildest looking roller coaster you have ever seen and or ridden in your life. Got it? It is almost exactly like that except I don't remember ever vomiting on stage. Like riding that insane roller coaster, being on stage you experience yourself climbing until you experience that amazing high and then things start to go wrong and you start heading down--slow at first but you start to pick up speed until you are free falling into a nightmare of failure. Right when you think that you are surely going to "die on stage" all of a sudden things level off and then you start climbing again only this time at a rapid speed (that is a great feeling.) You continue on at a insane speed, banking right and then left and then for some reason you go into a loop where you experience being upside down for a while. You are all over the place sometimes hearing the laughing which is a good thing and sometime just hearing the screaming which is not necessarily good and when you don't hear anything at all- -that is bad. When your 'time on stage' is up--when the ride stops--you feel beat up but proud of yourself as well you should. The more times you go on the ride and hit the stage the quicker you get at being able to handle the ups and downs and handling the good nights as well as the bad. It is in fact one heck of a ride.
