Welcome!
Part I
-. Please tell us if there is a special law in your country to protect women's rights and what is your opinion regarding this law.
My country is Nigeria, and there is a law in my country that protects women's rights. I will be telling you what the law is and my honest opinion regarding the law.
In Nigeria, we have the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act (VAPP Act) which was enacted in the year 2015 to protect the rights of women in the country. This law has been in existence for 10 years now, and it is a law that addresses various forms of violence; sexual, domestic violence, and harmful traditional practices against women in Nigeria. The law provides women with the legal resources and support for anyone who becomes a victim of any of the violence mentioned which gives women the full right to seek prosecution of offenders.
As for my honest opinion, I strongly believe the laws are a crucial step towards ensuring the protection and employment of women in Nigeria. The VAPP Act acknowledges and addresses the vulnerabilities and systemic inequalities that women in Nigeria face, most especially in the context where there are cultural norms and traditional practices may hinder women from achieving their dreams.
-. Please state whether you consider this law to be effective and whether it does not violate the principle of equality before the law enjoyed by both men and women.
Yes, I consider the VAPP Act effective, but I think the effectiveness of the law can vary based on enforcement and implementation of the law which needs to be enforced across the whole of Nigeria to truly protect women's rights. As for equality before the law, while we have special laws like the VAPP Act which focus on addressing specific vulnerabilities faced by women in Nigeria, at least they would complement broader law that helps to ensure that there is non-discrimination and equality for all genders in Nigeria.

Property and Economic Violence (This is unrelated to gender dynamics)
Physical Violence (This is a non-gender context)
- Have you or someone close to you been a victim of gender violence? What was the situation? Was the victim able to assert her rights? Do you think the law favored the victim?
YES, I know of someone close to me who has been a victim it gender violence.
THE SITUATION: My colleague in my formal place of work, experienced workplace sexual violence. She was meant to face inappropriate advances and threats of her losing her job if she refused to play to the tune. I.e comply (agree) to sleep with the perpetrator.
RIGHTS: The victim hurriedly reported the case to the Human Resource Officer (HR) who later took the case further to legal authorities for full backup.
LEGAL OUTCOME: The law provides the woman with some support, even though the process took her a long time.
Part III: Case Study 1.
A thief arrives at a restaurant and subdues the customers there so they give up their belongings. A woman refuses to hand over her cell phone and money, instead, she confronts the thief so he fires his firearm and shoots the aforementioned woman, causing her death. Please state whether we are dealing with a femicide or a homicide committed against a woman. Explain your answer.
The case would be classified as Homicide committed against a woman, and not Femicide.
Explanation of my answer:
Homicide: This refers to the killing of one person by another person, irrespective of the motive or gender. This means in this case, the death of the woman happened during a robbery attack and was not motivated based on her gender. The killing of the woman was a result of her resistance to the thief, and not a deliberate act targeting the woman alone simply because she is a woman.
Femicide: This has to do with the intentional killing of the woman directly because of her gender, which is motivated by misogyny, systemic discrimination, or gender-based violence. Examples of this are; killing that is linked to gender-based oppression, honor, killing, or domestic violence that led to murders.
In conclusion, the case is not Femicide because the motive behind the killing of the woman was not because of her gender, but because of the circumstances of the robbery case.
Case Study 2.
After some time, a man began insulting his wife, telling her that she was not worthy as a woman. He humiliated her, not letting her work or go out, claiming that a woman belongs to the house and cannot go out without her husband's consent. One day, in the middle of the argument, the woman tried to respond to his insults and he beat her up, leaving her face with bruises. -. Please state whether this is a crime of gender violence or a common crime committed against a woman. Explain your answer.
Yes it is a crime of gender violence
Explanation of my answer:
Gender Violence: The situation in this crime involves systematic abuse and violence is gender-based. The man is exerting control and he is dominating his wife, simply because of the gender of the woman, reinforcing stereotypes about the woman's place and also abusing the woman by using physical Violence to assert dominance.
The act of the man towards his wife reflects a pattern of behavior that is aimed at oppressing the woman because of her gender, which falls under the definition of gender violence. This type of crime is a crime that is addressed by laws aimed at protecting women from domestic and other forms of violence.
