The Book of Psalms in one of its hymns teaches the secrets of the law of Moses. Because as the prophets have taught with their stories, the merely formal or rational knowledge of the law is insufficient to understand it in depth.
Did young David sin when, out of necessity and hunger, he took the bread that was consecrated to God, as explained in 1 Samuel 21:1-7? Reality shows many cases where to fulfill one virtue it is necessary to violate another. A rigid interpretation of the law of Moses is literally impossible. This is why a teaching of the prophet Hosea was even quoted by Jesus when he had to teach about the validity of the Law, and this teaching of Hosea is of universal application: "For I desire mercy, not sacrifice, and acknowledgment of God rather than burnt offerings" Hosea 6:6.
The law of Moses, in essence, does not consist in the dictation of rigid precepts, but the law of Moses in its true essence implies a more flexible knowledge, as the Bible explains: "Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man", Ecclesiastes 12:13. What this is saying is that common sense that comes from the fear of God (constancy, firmness, devotion, equanimity, and stability) must come before the law, thought that has sense and logic.
This is why Psalm 119, which describes the wonders of the law, speaks about the need for God's grace for a deep comprehension of the law of Moses: "Your hands made me and formed me; give me understanding to learn your commands" Psalm 119:73. The creator of all things is omnipotent, teaches the Psalm, and in him, as the wisest being in the universe, is the ability to transmit the perfection or excellence of the gift of understanding to men. And this is so because reason is insufficient to reach the truth, and only in the understanding that is the same divine intelligence is there the profound knowledge of things.
And a demonstration of this was when King Solomon in Gibeon asked God in a dream for a heart that knows how to listen, and as a result, God gave the King a wise and understanding heart to judge his people with righteousness. The Book of Psalms, like every sapiential book, teaches men the necessity of the law, but makes it clear that its sufficiency lies in the wisdom that comes from God.
